At this point I started looking for other team members, initially made up of 3 people me included. It was hard to find the right people because this year weren't many programmers. Also, differently from usually, there were many groups composed by numerous members and at the end even my team counted 11 people.
It was hard to avoid clichè with such a theme but after some intense brainstorming we managed to find an original interpretation to it: we found out that rituals in psychology are those physical and mental actions that people who suffer from obsessive compulsive disorders do to overcome panic attacks.
So we created Obsession, a 2D puzzle platform game, where the main character suffering from OCD, heads out on a journey in his mind every time he has a panic attack. Each disorder is represented by different platform levels inside of which he needs to find some objects, mental concepts representations and verbal rituals, that he needs in order to complete the level and consequently overcome his panic attack.
Each second spent in the level will increase his discomfort that will lead progressively to a dimming of vision until it will be impossible to continue causing game over. To avoid this the player needs to find the ritual areas, represented by a word, that lower the anxiety levels by pressing the right button when he his nearby.
The game with a couple of playable levels is available for download a the link below and even if there wasn't enough time to calibrate and fix everything we gave our best up to the end. As always it was nice in this occasion to work with new people, to make friends and learn from each other. Only 8 of us got to the final award ceremony, where we won second place as best soundtrack, thanks to the person who wasn't with us on site but made the music for our project.
I'm happy of our team and our game that we developed together because it goes beyond mere momentary fun to leave messages and meanings that last in time. For other details you can find Obsessions's profile in the portfolio section on the site.
See you next time!
A presto!
